When director Rian Johnson and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt last worked together, they had a shoestring budget with which to create Brick – an atmospheric, noir-style story of a high school student investigating his ex-girlfriend's murder. But for time travel film Looper, Johnson and Gordon-Levitt had about US$60 million – and Emily Blunt. This is no place for hackneyed hoverboards, flux capacitors or knackered DeLoreans; this is a film about a man who kills people who've been sent back in time – before being given the task of assassinating an older version of himself, played by Bruce Willis. Looper is looking like the year's coolest flick.
